Mona Meesah
My first painting was on a piece of wood I found in the mountains. It looked like half a tiger face, with a knot hole for the eye and wood grain for the stripes. I brought it back to show off, but no one saw what I saw. Later I painted it to show what I’d seen there all along. And so it began.
I’ve always been artistic, but the painting began a couple years ago. I needed a new way to communicate the things I see, but can’t describe in ordinary words. It used to bother me when I realized that I see things so much differently than other people, but in painting that is a definite asset. Some of the best artists see things their own way, like my favorite artist and strongest influence, Van Gogh. His ability to express a unique point of view using color and texture is one of the reasons I thought of using a paintbrush to express my own veiwpoint.
I haven’t had any formal training in art, instead I’ve learned by doing. I try to reproduce the things that have inspired me throughout the day. Tacoma has such wonderful views. It makes me proud to represent the finer side of a city that doesn’t receive enough credit for its beauty.
Views of such grandeur aren’t just the Subject, but also the Inspiration of many paintings… some of them even turn out to be as striking as the images floating around in my mind (and out my window).
